Overview of Future Africa

In a tranquil setting in the heart of South Africa’s capital city of Pretoria, a new hub of scientific discovery and innovation for Africa is breaking ground and taking shape.

The University of Pretoria’s new Future Africa campus  (www.futureafrica.science) will be the place where Africa’s leading scientists and scholars from across the world and from a broad range of disciplines will come together to leverage the benefits of transdisciplinary research to address the grand challenges that face Africa and the world.

Issues of critical relevance to Africa will be tackled: from sustainable development and good governance, citizen participation and human rights, to advancing innovation for the bioresource economy.

In a world where ideas and technologies evolve rapidly and the challenges we face are multifaceted and transnational, Africa needs a new generation of original thinkers with international perspectives, yet with a scholarly vision and voice that is rooted in Africa.

FUTURE AFRICA DESIGN

The University of Pretoria’s new Future Africa campus is a place where Africa’s leading scientists and scholars from across the world and from a broad range of disciplines comes together to leverage the benefits of transdisciplinary research to address the grand challenges that face Africa and the world.

The Future Africa campus provides a dynamic living, learning and research environment where a community of scholars and other societal role players engage to advance excellence in scholarship, dialogue and impact.

The design of the campus has been an integrative process learning from the collective knowledge and experience of manifold contributors, as collated by the Future Africa Management Team and articulated by Earth World team of architectural experts. More information relating to the creative aspects of the campus architecture has been showcased at the Earth World Architects web pages. Our buildings and gardens are innovative and we believe an integral part of facilitating a new generation of scientists in Africa.

FUTURE AFRICA BUILDINGS

The Future Africa campus is designed to revolve around a lifestyle of research excellence and collaboration. A number of programs will be hosted on the campus and requires a layout that includes a dining hall, a conference centre, research commons and 265 living units ranging from single bedrooms to family units.

The project required a holistic approach to the subsequent urban design and architecture of the campus, with a specific focus on how architecture can play a role in fostering critical thinking and research. The Research Commons focuses specifically on interconnectedness of space and knowledge, flowing between informal discussion pits, meeting rooms and study tables.

The conference centre is the focal point of the campus, in which the sharing of knowledge as a collective will be key to the success of the campus. The campus is intended to play as much of a role in the education of the student body as the architecture is. Designed as a productive landscape, much of the vegetation will be edible, or useful to the focus of the campus’ studies. The architecture of the campus should play an active role in shaping minds, as much as it does in shaping environments.
